Later I learned Renaissance humanist running hand via Lloyd Reynolds. Instead of selling newspapers when I was a boy, I was taught calligraphy by Sam Schweitzer, the Scribe of Laguna Beach, for whom I wrote names on plaques. I continue to learn from Norma Cole, Juan Felipe Herrera, Stephen Kessler, Terry Kistler, Tongo Eisen-Martin, Laura Moriarty, Ishmael Reed, Barbara Jane Reyes, Jerome Rothenberg, Kim Shuck, Steven Silberman, Al Young, and Paul Vangelisti. Translating poetry from all the great Chinese dynasties with C H Kwock opened my eyes, which also gave me an amazing initiation into Chinese Zen. Later, Joanne Kyger took up some of the slack. George and Mary Oppen befriended me in 1969 and grounded me in the meaning of a life as writer. In school, my mentors were Jack Hirschman, Robert Creeley, and Lew Welch, whose friendships endured beyond the walls of academe. Dad once told me to think of every word I write as if they were going into a Western Union telegram, each costing money, and so to breathe warmth into each. My father again comes to mind when I think of my writing guides. A descendant in his lineage, I am honored indeed to be ordained in his core community, which continues to make refuge for me, as I hope I for it. My root teacher is Vietnamese pacifist Zenmaster Thich Nhat Hanh. These experiences are still in my bones: true memory. In San Francisco, I was first trained in zazen by Dainin Katagiri Roshi. Paul Reps showed me Zen at a little shop on Sunset Boulevard a couple years later. My first formal experience of meditation was at a Quaker retreat in 1964. My life has also been blessed to have been born within reach of living teachers. ThatвЂ™s where I learned a certain sense of literary discernment. My mom was a fan of Thurber and subscribed to The New Yorker.В I liked reading J D SalingerвЂ™s stories there, & also the little fillers, at the ends of articles, with quotes from items in the news, with their wry, acerbic comments. So a seed was planted & I became вЂњa man of letters.вЂќ Thank you, Dad. And there I also found bound transcripts of talks by Krishnamurti. In the Army Now вЂ“В 5th shelf up, 8th in from the right вЂ“ was one heвЂ™d written, still a classic.

The art direction here definitely matches the zen atmosphere promised in the title.When I was a boy, my dad waved his hand across his tall book case & said, Son, any book of mine youвЂ™re free to read. The puzzle menus in Zen Bound 2 are gorgeous lantern-lined sakura trees. No detail in the wood grain or paint patterns is lost as you spin the figurines.

In fact, as gorgeous as Zen Bound 2 is on an iPhone or iPad, it looks even slicker on a sharp PC monitor.

Though some of coolness of manipulating the ornaments may be missing, every pixel of Zen Bound 2's style is intact. It's not the same as swiping and flicking an iPhone screen, but it works better than a mouse.

However, if you play Zen Bound 2 on a Mac (the download works on either platform) you can use Apple's multitouch trackpad to replicate the touchscreen controls. I grew frustrated, but to be fair, I suspect a player without experience playing Zen Bound 2 on an iPad may not have the same issues. There is an odd disconnect between manipulating the ornaments and the mouse controls on a PC it's as if there's an added layer of mental processing to move the ornament exactly how you want instead of the natural spinning with the iDevice touchscreen. You moved the figurines with your fingers exactly how you might if they were in your hands. Though you couldn't actually 'feel' the ornaments, the touchscreen at least gave you some semblance of tactile controls. On the iPhone and iPad, these nooks and crannies were a fun test.
